Artificial intelligence has brought undeniable momentum to the claims and medical malpractice space. Between predictive analytics, large language models, and automation tools, the industry has seen bold promises about speed, accuracy, and efficiency. But the most meaningful progress hasn’t come from replacing people, it has come from augmenting human judgment.

At its core, the claims process remains deeply human. It relies on strategy, experience, empathy, and accountability. The most successful AI implementations respect that reality. We’ve seen AI deliver real value when it provides timely, contextual insight that helps adjusters and defense teams make better decisions, earlier. Predictive modeling can flag claims that are statistically more likely to escalate into litigation and more importantly surface why. That early visibility allows teams to intervene sooner, manage expectations, and prevent unnecessary escalation.

Another powerful use case is information synthesis. Medical malpractice files are dense, complex, and sprawling. Adjusters and defense teams often manage dozens of cases simultaneously, moving rapidly between records, notes, and depositions. AI can reconnect professionals with their own prior observations … flagging inconsistencies, highlighting prior concerns, or reminding them of strategy decisions already made. In this role, AI doesn’t replace thinking; it strengthens recall and continuity, allowing humans to operate at a higher level.

Where AI begins to fall short is when it prioritizes speed over ownership. Clients consistently value claims professionals who understand where a case is heading and why. Over-automation risks turning strategic professionals into passive recipients of machine-generated plans. A model can produce a polished action plan, but if the human operator isn’t deeply connected to the reasoning behind it, the strategy loses meaning and accountability erodes.

To mitigate this risk, a layered approach is essential. As model accuracy continues to mature, insights should often flow through experienced supervisors, analytics leaders, or legal strategists before reaching the field. These reviewers translate data into human language and professional judgment—not “the model says,” but “here’s what we’re seeing and why it matters.” This preserves trust and positions AI as a teammate, not a taskmaster.

There are limited, low-complexity claim types where straight-through automation makes sense, but only when reliability is absolute. In medical malpractice and complex civil litigation, nuance is non-negotiable. Just as we wouldn’t trust a self-driving car at 95% accuracy, we shouldn’t allow models to make decisions that demand expert interpretation and accountability.
